Cherry Angioma Removal to Enhance Skin Clarity
What is Cherry Angioma?
A cherry angioma is a common, non-cancerous skin growth made up of a cluster of small blood vessels. They are very common, especially in adults over the age of 30, and tend to increase in number with age. They can develop anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the trunk, arms, shoulders, and sometimes the face and neck.
What causes Cherry Angioma?
Cherry Angiomas are an example of an overabundance of small blood vessels within the skin. They are particularly a common sight in the later parts of life and tend to increase over time. While there are other factors at play, family history, female control, and even some changes to the environment seem to be a contributor. Other than that, they tend to be harmless and are not a sign of skin cancer.
Cherry Angioma Treatment
Shortwave diathermy (SWD) is an effective method for removing cherry angiomas.
How SWD works
A very fine, hair-like needle or probe is used to apply a shortwave diathermy current directly to the cherry angioma. The needle is tapped over the cherry which delivers heat precicely to the targeted area. This instantly heats the blood vessels within the angioma which causes the vessel walls to coagulate, or seal shut, and the angioma to dry up. A small scab will form over the treated area in the days following the procedure. The body will naturally break down and reabsorb the destroyed tissue. As the scab falls off, the cherry angioma fades and disappears.
After treatment some redness or swelling may occur immediately after treatment but typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. The resulting scab will heal over the course of one to two weeks.
The procedure's precision allows for targeted treatment without damaging the surrounding skin, which minimizes the risk of scarring. Larger cherry angiomas may require more than one session for complete removal.
